Board of Planning and Adjustment:
As of this year, the duties of a the Planning Board and Board of Adjustment fall under one board.
This is an appointed board that acts in an advisory capacity to the Town Council.
The Planning Board deals with the permitting of development proposals and
administering the town's zoning ordinance.
The Board also initiates
ordinance amendments and makes recommendations to Town Council as to what
action to take on proposed ordinance amendments.
The Planning Board also
plays a key role in the town's long range planning efforts.
The Board of
Adjustment hears variance requests and special use permit requests.
This is
a quasi-judicial board. Their decisions are final. Any appeals to their
decisions are referred to the Polk County Superior Court.
The Board of
Adjustment reviews any challenges to zoning administration decisions.
The
Board of Planning and Adjustment meets regularly at 6:30 pm in the Town Hall
on the second Thursday of every month.
Current members of the Board are
Mary Shambaugh, Joan Scoggins, Kathleen Nowakowski, and Christopher Rome.

July 4th Committee: The July 4th committee has the responsibility of planning the layout and activities for the Fabulous 4th celebration.
The festival is an annual event in downtown Columbus. The committee welcomes ideas and participation by the public in planning this exciting event.

Christmas Committee:The Christmas committee arranges activities and decorations for the Town’s Christmas parade and celebration.
Following the parade, Santa usually visits with children in his Christmas House at Stearns Park.
Caroling is enjoyed by everyone and and is the source of the name of this festival, The Columbus Christmas Carol.
