Welcome to the Town of Columbus web site. The Town of Columbus is a beautiful town, which serves as the gateway to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Blessed with great scenery and moderate climate, Columbus is a desirable destination for tourists, people seeking a retirement location, and anyone who appreciates the experience of small town friendly life.
The Town’s population is just above 1,000 and is growing. Concern for our environment and planned growth is what Columbus is striving for. We have doubled in land area from slightly more than 1,112 acres to 2,180 acres as of October 2007. Columbus has several developing subdivisions to allow others to move in and experience what others have long enjoyed.
The Town has recently constructed a Public Works Facility. The Town Hall was recently renovated and space has been converted from storage to create Town Council chamber with an expanded seating capacity of 80 people, more than tripling its previous capacity.
The Town employs 18 full-time employees to provide services of police, planning, water, sewer and street maintenance. Administrative staff consists of the Town Manager, Town Clerk, Town Planner, Water Billing Clerk, and Assistant Finance Director.
The Town provides water and sewer service, and offers solid waste services, which are contracted to All Bright Sanitation. All utility bills are collected at Town Hall.
In 2004 the Town switched from a council-administrator form of government to a town manager form of government. The Town Council saw a need to have more formal administration to handle and deal with the growth and change the Town is facing.
